Your rights when you shop online in Ireland
Cancelling within 14 days, faulty items, refunds and buying from UK shops: a plain-English guide for Irish shoppers, with links to the CCPC.
This is a plain-English summary, not legal advice. The CCPC consumer pages have the official detail.
Changing your mind: 14 days
When you buy online from a business in the EU, you normally have 14 days to cancel without giving a reason, counted from the day you receive the goods. That includes items bought in a sale or on Black Friday. The shop must refund what you paid, including the standard delivery cost, within 14 days of you cancelling. You may have to pay to send the item back if the shop told you so before you bought.
Some things are usually excluded, such as personalised items, perishable food, and sealed hygiene or software products once opened.
Faulty or not as described
This is separate from the 14-day right. Goods must be of acceptable quality, fit for purpose and as described. If they are not, the shop (not the manufacturer) has to sort it out. Under Irish law you can reject faulty goods and get a refund within a short period after delivery, and later ask for a repair or replacement. A shop's “no refunds on sale items” sign does not remove these rights.
Buying from UK shops
Since Brexit, UK shops are not covered by EU consumer law in the same way, and your protection depends on the shop and on UK law. In practice: read the shop's returns policy before you buy, check who pays return postage to Ireland, and check whether customs or VAT are included in the price at checkout. If something goes wrong with a shop in another country, the European Consumer Centre Ireland may be able to help.
Paying safely
- Pay by card: if a shop never delivers, your bank may be able to reverse the payment (a “chargeback”).
- Be careful with deals far below every other shop, on sites you have never heard of.
- Never pay a “delivery fee” from a text message: check your order on the shop's own site.
Where to get help
- CCPC: your rights, and how to complain about a business in Ireland.
- ECC Ireland: problems with shops in other EU countries, Iceland, Norway or the UK.
